The Local Community Food Centre, Stratford, Ontario

That was the title of the most recent workshop devoted to food preservation. It sums up the attitude of this new and very vital part of the culinary community that began with Toronto’s legendary food centre, The Stop.

With activist Steve Stacey at the helm and as part of Canada’s Community Food Centres, The Local Community Food Centre is evolving to be a hub of both culinary education but also culinary excellence.

The Local serves low- or no-cost meals that are utterly delicious – Stratford is, after all, Action Central for the food life of Ontario with a very active farming community and a world-renowned chefs school.

During the Community Kitchen Sessions volunteers and participants come together to share recipes and help each other develop their cooking skills. They showcase healthy, delicious recipes using seasonal ingredients grown in our own community gardens and produced by our local farmers. Participants also take part in hands-on cooking experiences and have the chance to share their own favourite recipes while they learn a few new ones. Every Community Kitchen Session ends with a delicious family-style meal in the dining room.
