The Rich Uncle Tavern, Kitchener, Ontario

Located in Kitchener-Waterloo, a region steeped in history, The Rich Uncle Tavern looked back to find inspiration for its name and in doing so, did not need to search very far.

In the late 1800’s, Joseph Winterhalt, a local cigar manufacturer in Kitchener, which was then known as the City of Berlin, created the “Rich Uncle” line of cigars and boasted they were “10 cents and worth it”. Thus, in honour of proud craftsmen like Mr. Winterhalt, The Rich Uncle Tavern chose to garner its namesake from the unique brand of cigar that was once manufactured and sold on the very block they now reside.

The Rich Uncle Tavern is built on hearty live-fire fare and shareable snacks that pay homage to the brasseries and taverns of yesteryear…and there were many in downtown Berlin.  Like it’s famous Kitchener Farmers Market, it was action central for this bustling, agricultural and manufacturing hub.

Rediscovering Culinary Roots in KW

The menu is a culinary journey of a tapestry woven with threads of tradition, innovation, and a deep respect for local flavors. Long before it was known as such, this establishment bore witness to the artistry that unfolded in its kitchen,  through iconic kitchens like Peter Martin’s, and Jonathan Gushue’s Berlin.

Influences and Culinary Innovations

The menu is a testament to a dedication to preserving culinary classics while infusing them with inventive techniques.  Local Duck Wings; sticky, tender, crispy duck wings bathed in a sweet maple soy glaze, adorned with chili crunch, and served with fermented soy aioli. Korean Chicken & Waffles. A fusion of flavors featuring Korean fried chicken atop house-made kimchi waffles, showcasing the art of in-house kimchi preparation.

The Rich Uncle’s devotion to locally sourced ingredients is evident in partnerships with suppliers such as Rico’s Mushrooms, T&J’s Seafood, Fore Quarter, Mountain Oak Cheese. They are a huge fan of Mountain Oak’s Toasted Onion Gouda. The kitchen’s culinary prowess extends to revitalizing retro classics like a reinterpretation of Shrimp Toast, employing new techniques to breathe fresh life into an old favourite.

Embracing Sustainability and Local

Their food philosophy revolves around sustainability, minimizing waste, and supporting local producers. Harnessing every element of their creations, crafting house-made stocks and kimchi, and cultivating microgreens in-house.  The culinary path is an ever-evolving journey, filled with dedication to flavor, respect for tradition, and a commitment to embracing the vibrant culinary community of KW.

The wood-fired oven is king. There’s a massive Ontario craft beer list and the cocktails range from classic (Manhattans and Negronis) to truly inventive (Cucumber~Elderflower Gimlet).
