Boreal Berry Farm Winery, Saint Charles, Ontario
Boreal Berry Farm Winery is a natural, biodynamic fruit farm and winery in Northern Ontario and Canada’s coldest climate winery. They are also the only winery in Northern Ontario, and the oldest and largest haskap (honeyberry) orchard in Eastern North America, producing haskap, cherries, Saskatoons, aronia, sea buckthorn and lingonberries/partidgeberries.
Offering orchard tours, winery tours, wine tastings they also have a licensed patio with picnic lunches available overlooking their beautiful grounds. The winery picnic baskets include only locally produced foods and are paired with our handcrafted wines.
Their farm is a testament to hard work and imagination. Mira recently wrote: “We have very much enjoyed our yearly Food Day Canada events, they have become our most popular event at our Winery! We are looking forward to this year with some exciting news – our locally grown berries are now sold in Metro grocer’s in the frozen foods category. We are so pleased to be able to offer Ontario fruit year round now!
I have to tell you, it was the Food Day Canada movement that inspired us to start a frozen fruit offering. We noted that many restaurants and food service providers had Canadian fruit seasonally, but never year round. Events like Food Day Canada taught us the importance of ensuring availability of local foods to people. We saw the demand was there, but outside of our Canadian growing season, available fruit was primarily imported.
Empowered by your work to encourage the local food movement in Canada, and our experience with meeting and talking to people interested in local foods during our Food Day Canada events, we decided to take the plunge. Last year, we began a project to both expand our fruit orchard, and focus on being able to supply people in Canada with year round fruit. We converted our cellar into a walk in freezer. purchased several fruit cooling units, and started hand packing our berries for retail sale. Today, we supply Metro grocers, 100km Foods, Flanagan’s Food Service, Muskoka Good Food Co-op, Clover belt Food Co-op, and several organic food delivery services. We recently invested in a packing line, and now how have hired staff. We now grow, pack and supply over 10 different varieties of Ontario grown, certified organic fruits year round, we have haskap, sea buckthorn, aronia, saskatoon, mara des bois strawberry, wild blueberry, marion blackberry, tart cherry, and red and black currants, and we are working on lingonberries for next year.”
