Bogside Brewing, Montague, Prince Edward Island
It is so good to see Chef Dave Mottershall back cooking on Prince Edward Island. No matter where he’s been, his Instagram handle is @chef_rouge…likely because of his red hair, but also because of the red-soiled island that he calls home. Dave has chef’d everywhere from Banff Springs Hotel to Langara Fishing Lodge; from his own experimental pop up restaurant Loka in Toronto to the Claddagh Oyster House in Charlottetown. He is a very talented, super-creative chef.
Bogside Brewing cracked opened its doors (the beer won’t be ready for a while) to the public in May of this year and with Motthershall at the helm, the food is going to be outstanding, a wonderful interlude in the Points East Drive that winds its way past 50 beaches, some of the finest in Canada. Till theirs are on tap, they have a great selection of PEI’s beers.
Meanwhile, feast on dill-pickled Island Blue mussels or a platter of fresh oysters. Try the halibut with lobster sauce and watercress. I’m not sure when I’ve seen a more hyper local salad…smoked gouda, black garlic, island greens and rye berries. At this time of year there’ll be rhubarb-something…in this case a lovely cake with whipped sheeps’ yogurt. It’s really little wonder that PEI has taken the byline as “Canada’s Food Island”.
