The Wellington Gastropub, Ottawa, Ontario

In Ottawa there’s a very tight knit chefs community and when they get together, even when it’s to compete, the camaraderie is real.

The team at The Wellington Gastro Pub is large part of this city’s burgeoning culinary scene!  They are taking local to a new, approachable place.  I read the menu and, I guess, because this is the sort of food I travel for, my mouth waters.

Co-owner Shane Waldron is the host and seems to be bred for a career in hospitality. Chef Chris Deraiche’s food is ALL about flavour! Rather than lacing a simple frittata with simple cheese, they may add the bite of Bleu d’Elizabeth, a cheese I often buy when I’m in the Ottawa region.  They brine a Nagano pork loin to serve with roasted turnips, cabbage + Cortland apples. Le Coprin mushrooms from near Chelsea, QC are often on the menu.  This time of year they’re served with asparagus and leeks under the mustard spaetzle.

The charcuterie plate is exceptional…light and airy chicken mousse with thin slices of smoked duck on grilled bread.  The beef tartare is the most delicious I’ve ever eaten with a hint of truffle oil.  Finish off dinner with ‘Adriana’s Ice Creams’.  The evening we were there the star of the show was peanut butter with milk chocolate bits.
