The Elora Brewing Company, Elora, Ontario

The Village of Elora has always been just a bit different….in the best way.  Set solidly on a limestone hill on the confluence of the Grand and Irvine Rivers where the high walls of Elora Gorge create some of the best rock climbing and hiking in southern Ontario…not to mention a cross the gorge zip line, the village has been home to a vibrant arts and music community for decades. Potters, painters, musicians, writers all live here as do countless academics. It’s the home of two nationally recognized music festivals, RiverFest and The Elora Festival where performers from Metric to Dame Kiri Te Kanawa have held forth.

With this sort of demographic and the current upswell in craft brewing, it just makes sense that a brewing company has opened.  But, in true Elora-style, it’s one of a kind. Beautifully-restored by local craftspeople who’ve exposed the stone walls with their bits of charred timber from a fire in the early part of the last century, it’s in the heart of the community and unlike most other micro-breweries, it has a great casual restaurant with Chef Ben Sachse in charge. Having honed his skills in classical french kitchens from Stratford to as far away as Osaka, Japan. The menu focuses on beer inspired comfort foods, with playful pairings, on-site butchery, and charcuterie.  As he writes: “Great beer goes best with great food.”

The Elora Brewing Company itself has a 16,000 litre capacity brewery with the brewing team led by Head Brewer, Alex Nichols.

The clear intention is to provide a true craft beer experience accompanied by some of the best ‘farm-to-table’ fare in the region. Interesting beer recipes give rise to creative dishes and creative dishes give rise to some wonderful, imaginative brews.

The menu changes seasonally but is rooted in the local food experience.
