River Café, Calgary

river cafe, Calgary restaurants, Canadian cuisine, Sal Howell, Andrew Winfield, canada foodLocated in the middle of Prince’s Island Park, on the lagoon where the Bow River passes though downtown Calgary, River Café has featured “Seasonal Canadian Cuisine” since the mid-1990s.

Inspired by the natural setting of the Bow River Valley, the restaurant has the feel and nostalgic appearance of an old Rocky Mountain fishing lodge with an open-hearth fieldstone fireplace and panoramic views of the park and Calgary’s dramatic cityscape beyond. Fly-fishing artifacts honour the Bow River’s reputation as a world famous fly-fishing destination.

Owned by Sal Howell, who also owns Boxwood Café, River Café fosters an environment among its employees where they’re encouraged to fully engage in the creative process. This culture based on connectivity is evident in the way food is viewed and cultivated at River Café- growing their own produce, sustainably harvesting ingredients, and sharing their culinary creations.

Chef Andrew Winfield has been with River Café since 2001 and shares this passion for minimizing the distance from River Café, Calgary restaurants, Canadian cuisine, Canada foodfarm to plate and for honouring those farmers and fisheries that practice sustainability. After traveling to Spain, Italy and France, Chef Winfield also developed a passion for the art of curing meats and cheesemaking.  His dedication and respect for his
craft is inspiring.

The food is exquisite…regional, organic, free range from local farmers and producers and from their organic garden at Highwood Crossing in High River.

Culinary highlights? Sprouted Red Fife wheat bread with restaurant churned butter. The perfect salad of Desiree potatoes, various hot house, heirloom tomatoes and black cod; the stinging nettle chimichurri atop a venison loin and DESSERT! A berry studded cake with creme fraiche ice cream and lots of caramel sauce.

Food Day Canada 2012 Menu

“An extraordinary dining experience is to embark on a journey. We have created a beautiful place in an extraordinary setting and have tended to the details that make you feel at home: staff who care, a Chef who is passionate about quality and the regional seasonal ingredients that bring a taste of place to your palate.”
