The Lobster Shack, On the Boardwalk, Souris, P.E.I.

Lobster ShackThe name Colville Bay Oyster resonates all across Canada. Chef Michael Smith endorses them as the best in the nation and many food pros would agree.  The Flynn family live around the estuary in Souris, PEI, near their oyster leases and, from there, they ship these extraordinary bivalves all over North America.  

But while I’d savoured Colville Bays many times, I met Colville Oyster Co. owners Johnny and Leo Flynn on their lobster boat, the Owen Mor..IMG_3602As seamen, Johnny (below right on his boat) and his brother, Leo, have few equals. They cultivate oysters and they fish for lobster out of North Lake Harbour.  And now, the family has a restaurant, really a cute little building with picnic tables on the beach, about a kilometre away from their home. The tagline is “Specializing in Colville Bay oysters and PEI lobster. Promoting PEI seafood one species at a time! “

There, beside the Souris Beach boardwalk, you can purchase oysters, either shucked or in the shell overlooking the salty waters in which they were raised and you can also feast on the freshest lobster rolls anywhere on the Atlantic  coast.  A whole steamed lobster is $12.95 cooked likely by the restaurant manager, Tom Flynn, Johnny’s son.  From time to time there are even some steamed quahog clams hand picked from the shores near Vernon Bridge.  With sea breezes blowing, sitting on a red sand beach, there is hardly a more Maritime experience

And if you need more of PEI to enjoy, head down the boardwalk to Chef Michael Smith‘s Flavour Shack.  There you’ll find his cookbooks and a lot of local foodie treats.  If the cooler is full, it’ll even have local cheeses and certainly some island-made soft drinks
