Stefan and I packed up our hand made pretzel buns, corn bread with fresh Island corn from Silver Rill, and cherry tomato salad with Diane Andiel’s farmhouse goat feta. We drove up the twisting Trans Canada that hugs the steep side of Finlayson Arm, otherwise known as the Malahat to the lush farmlands of Cobble Hill. Our destination was Deerholme Farm; the kitchen, garden and home of Lynn and Bill Jones. The delicious evening was well underway with a local lamb on the BBQ spit, a selection of beef from “just down the road” on the smoker and a groaning harvest table of contributions from guests that arrived with stories of procurement, growing, baking and preparing. Sinclair Philip arrived with crab caught in Sooke, Don Genova brightened the table with a blueberry salsa, John Ehrlich grew the sweet corn and Mara Jernigan baked a fabulous rhubarb crostata. Bill’s guests filled the property with laughter, conversation & local lore; farmers, cheesemakers, chefs at every turn. What a culinary treat to welcome the height of summer to the table and celebrate the bounty of Cowichan in such great company!
