Brad Stewart of Quebec, Canada
Wow! Hard to beat some of these menus. What I lack in gastronomic complexity, hopefully I’ll make up for with the company we keep!
For the second year in a row, we’re having a BBQ with Ivan Hale and of the Québec Farmer’s association and his amazing family. They’ve got a 300 acre farm, north of Wakefield in the Gatineau Hills. Since we’re both on the river, we will be braving the rapids under the Pont Gendron and boating to their farm.
Today, I’m driving out to see Denis Perrault and his wife Lyse, who runs Domaine Perrault winery just outside of Ottawa. They are doing an incredible job of producing elegant summer whites, and some exotic, delicious reds. My favourite is their rosé. I’m not exaggerating when I say it’s better than many Tavels I’ve tasted! Unbelievable with grilled fowl.
Some local food highlights: local cranberries from Venosta (I’m over the grudge of their hockey team beating us in the finals last year), Hale Family beef, and a bumper crop of Christophe’s mushrooms. If the summer rain ever gets you down, I highly suggest finding a local mushroom picker. They’re the usually the ones walking around with the ear to ear grin!
Happy Food Day!
