The Winners! Canadian Cheese Awards ~ 2014

cheese of the year 3000 mar 12When I first began my writing career, I could count and name Canada’s good specialty cheeses on my fingers. Today there are scores, many which could easily compete on the world stage. It’s an extraordinary list.

The inaugural Canadian Cheese Awards/Le Concours des fromages fins canadiens took place at the venerable St. Lawrence Market on Monday, April 7th.  What makes them so very special is that these are the first awards in Canadian history to honour cheeses from all milks…cow, sheep, goat and water buffalo.  It has been a massive undertaking and is the culmination of a dream for Georgs Kolesnikovs, the founder of the Great Canadian Cheese Festival.

Judging took place at the University of Guelph’s Food Science complex with experts from across Canada gathering to blind taste the 291 entries from 76 producers over two days.  Only pure natural cheese accepted for judging. That means with no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives, and no modified milk ingredients.
