Java Jack’s Restaurant & Gallery, Rocky Harbour, Newfoundland

Few National Parks in Canada are as dramatic as Gros Morne on the western shore of Newfoundland.  It’s a region of tuckamore and berries, fireweed and fishing.  A handful of small villages are tucked into the folds of the coast where it’s possible to refuel both body and soul.

Java Jack’s Restaurant & Gallery is in the busy wee town of Rocky Harbour.  It’s not easy running a restaurant in such a remote location.  One has to become self sufficient on many fronts including having a good garden to supplement the often-delayed shipments of produce.

Executive Chef Bernice Hollett is a native Newfoundlander hailing from Arnold’s Cove, NL. Right out of high school, she left home to pursue Culinary Arts at the prestigious Culinary Institute of Canada in Charlottetown.  She’s a woman of many talents…holding an Interprovincial Red Seal, a Ship Cook Certification and is qualified as a Medical First Responder. While she will tell you that her mission is to treat all our guests to a delicious experience, she delights in being able to train and inspire new chef apprentices.

Her menus are pure, hearty Newfoundland!  Bologna is a side with your eggs in the morning or there’s a full on lobster Benedict! Wild blueberries and partridgeberries are harvested to make pails full of preserves to serve with her buttermilk bran muffins. Salt cod cakes with Java Jack’s “million dollar relish”. There’re always fresh Newfoundland mussels and there’s even a wild rabbit pie made with Labrador hare.

The wise government of Newfoundland has allowed wild game to be served in restaurants across the Province so Bernice serves forth a lusty moose meat tourtiere with golden flakey pastry.  She bakes cottage pudding for one of the desserts to serve with whatever berries are available.
