Victoria-by-the-Sea is the essence of real Prince Edward Island. Tucked onto the Island’s southern shore, the village (c. 1819) is a web of unpaved lanes and tree lined streets all leading to the ocean and the sheltered harbour. In the early days, it was an important sea port shipping produce, especially potatoes, to Europe, the West Indies and the rest of the eastern seaboard.
Today it’s home to the longest running little theatre – The Victoria Playhouse Festival, an enclave of permanent
artists and a lot of maritime history housed in the local, still-operating lighthouse.
It was in one of the gracious Victorian mansions that Chef Stephen Hunter opened the Victoria Village Inn 8 years ago. His commitment to ‘local’ ingredients is complete. As a chef, even before opening the inn, he was the distribution channel for organic island produce to the province’s best restaurants.
His menus are ultimately seasonal and change constantly as the produce and fisheries warrant. But every dish, no matter what time of year, is served with locally-grown, organic vegetables. It could be grilled beef tenderloin with caramelized red onion and pungent parsley pesto or a bowl of steamed Island Blue Mussels in a red Thai curry broth enriched with coconut milk. There’s always a crème brûlée of the day.
