Stephen Treadwell is one of this Province’s food stars. He was recently honoured by the Ontario Hostelry Institute with a Gold Award as Restaurateur of the Year and claimed a Silver in the 2014/2015 and 2016 Good Food Innovation Awards from The University of Guelph and Food Day Canada.
Long before they opened their restaurant doors in 2006, the year they were blessed by EnRoute Magazine as one of Canada’s Best New Restaurants, Chef Stephen Treadwell and Sommelier James Treadwell believed in the “farm-to-table” concept. “Farm-to-Table” is not new, since it has been considered the norm for all great restaurants in Europe. Now, here in Niagara, the father/son team are vocal and passionate about emphasizing the best artisan producers of Southwestern Ontario.
Their restaurant is a showcase of local farmers, producers and vintners. It is simple, perfect food – allowing the ingredients to speak for themselves. Whether it’s Mario Pingue’s 24 Month Aged Prosciutto with shaved Ontario Pecorino and some peppery field-grown Arugula or Roasted “Cumbrae Farms” Rack of Pork with Crackling and Apple Puree on a bed of buttered summer vegetables, there’s no “confusion” food here. Pork pie and mustard; wild B.C. salmon gravlax with soda bread and horseradish cream; duck confit with three bean chili and the requisite sticky toffee pudding for dessert served with a dish of date ice cream.
And while diners explore culinary Niagara on their plates, James has ensured that the cellar is full of the world-class wines produced mere minutes away, with special emphasis on smaller wineries, with little or no representation in the LCBO. Five Rows, Twenty Twenty-Seven, Organized Crime, 13th Street, Stratus and the exceptional Queylus Vineyards have become staples on the list.Treadwell food day canada 2017
