SoBo, Tofino, British Columbia
SoBo, short for ‘Sophisticated Bohemian’, is the creation of Lisa and Artie Ahier, Tofino locals; community-oriented Canadians of soul and distinction. The food is made in a kitchen brimming with hard work and love.
SoBo is the kind of relaxed dining nook one can go to linger over cornmeal crusted fresh west coast BC oysters and fresh slaw, enjoy the messiness of a massive free-run chicken burrito for a lunchtime boost or savour one of BC’s more amazing wines after work.
Lisa, with Artie as the very creative chef, shares their Island’s harvest throughout their menu…from brilliantly coloured salads to soups guaranteed to take away the chill of surfing the swells of the Pacific.
Their menus ar mostly sourced from the tiny Vancouver Island farms surrounding Tofino. Organics are highlighted in each dish-local artisan cheeses step into the limelight-and their amazing staff ensures that everyone seems to leave with a smile on their face. Enjoy a shared basket of polenta fries, perfect for after-surf snacking with a heaping Nanoose Edibles salad and a duck confit pizza or a BC humpback shrimp roti. Someone once asked “Is this fabulous Canadian food, or is this delicious Canadian art? ” Suffice it to say that the artist is in the kitchen.
For 2017, the menu was a massive collection of ingredients from the island …”island lamb, peas and gnocchi Ling cod with summer corn, Bennie potatoes and chanterelle mushrooms. Clams, mussels, halibut cheeks with heirloom tomato dashi.”
