Over the Hill Orchards, Lumsden, Saskatchewan

Dean and Sylvia Dean and Sylvia Kreutzer have always been fruit lovers.  Dean’s earliest memories was of picking saskatoons. Sylvia remembers wading through the river to get to the wild blueberry patch up north.  The turning point was when they toured a local nursery for some flowers when we came upon Apricots, Plums, Apples and Pears! ” We asked the salesperson the question we Canada food, Canadian cuisinenow hear most from our customers, “We can grow these here?”  Well it may  not be the Okanagan but the light and heat of the summer has allowed them to adapt.  And the work of researcher Bob Bors of the University of Saskatchewan has helped a lot, too.  His cold hardy cherries are the best I’ve ever eaten.

My friend and fellow food journalist,  C.J. Katz writes:”Dean and Sylvia have been producing delicious organic fruit products with their fantastic Carmine Jewel cherries for nearly a decade. Their signature chocolates that enrobe a single ripe red sour cherry have been served to both royalty and visitors to our magnificent province. And their fruit preserves are outstanding! Try a generous smear of their cherry fruit preserves on your morning toast – it will dance like a burst of Saskatchewan sunshine on the wide-open prairie.”

With the completion of their new fruit processing facility, the farm tours and tastings and even their dessert cafe are all on one location.  They still sell at the Regina Farmers Market, but to really experience the potential and the bounty of the Prairies, take the time to pop out to Over the Hill Orchards in Lumsden for a delicious visit.  You’ll see some of the most innovative fruit growing in Canada and you can have a Canada food, Canadian cuisinepiece of pie or a tart or some crêpes. All the baking is gluten free and Dean tells me that they are even making fruit milkshakes!

Their mission statement: To offer the finest quality certified organic fruit and fruit products possible, and to promote Saskatchewan-made products, businesses and tourism.
