Le Resto, Chelsea, Quebec

Le Resto Fish and ChipsEvery time I head to this region of Quebec, I marvel. Firstly because the landscape, almost adjoining Gatineau Park, is so spectacular but also because it is so close to downtown Ottawa. No where in North America is such wild, river-crossed beauty so close to a capital city. And then there is the gastronomy!

Line Boyer and James Hargreaves, co-owners of the Chelsea Smokehouse where one can purchase everything from Colville Bay and Fanny Bay oysters to Atlantic lobster and Quebec sturgeon caviar, decided in 2010 to expand into the full foodservice world and open a casual fish restaurant in the heart of town in a busy little strip mall. For some it may seem like an odd location, next door to a FreshMart. But Quebecers love to eat well so this cute little cafe is a community gathering place.

The menu is laden with great food – salmon in every way imaginable to their  stellar fish and chips using the loin of sustainably harvested cod and thick cut fries sprinkled liberally with sea salt.  The “mushy” peas are actually freshly steamed and mashed with mint.     There’s a signature smokehouse chowder (smoked cod, salmon and clams) and their version of Caesar with cold-smoked, hot-smoked and jerky salmon.   The bison burger is topped with smoked gouda and caramelized onions.

The beer list is all Quebec brewed…and the desserts are all house-made and sound so much better in French – gateau au fromage, fondant au chocolat et sorbet, shortcake au coulis au fruits and croustade des fraise et rhubarbe.
