Janice Beaton’s connection to Food Day Canada goes back many years. We celebrated together on Cape Breton Island, her familial home, in 2007. On a hilltop in Mabou Mines, high above the ocean, we grilled good steaks and partied long into the night.
Her business, however, is in Calgary where, since 2000, Janice Beaton Fine Cheese has been a premiere specialty retailer of artisanal cheeses, charcuterie, and accompaniments. She opened her restaurant, FARM, in 2008.
She and her staff are cheese-mongers par excellence! Their knowledge of Canadian cheese is extraordinary and their selection is excellent, from Quebec’s Oka Classique, Le Migneron de Charlevoix, Le 1608 (made with the milk of Canadienne cows), and the unctuous Riopelle to Alberta’s Sylvan Star Gouda, to Ontario’s Glengarry Cheese’s Celtic Blue to the full line of David Wood’s Salt Spring Island cheeses.
You can join them for lunch at The Grilled Cheese Bar where they also serve daily cheese plates. Private tours of the Cheese Case for groups are in demand, as are their beautiful cheese-laden gift boxes and semi-monthly Saturday afternoons they demonstrate and sample from a number of producers and suppliers. JBFC can also host off-site events customised to the client’s needs.
