Grass Roots Prairie Kitchen, Winnipeg, Manitoba

grass roots prairie kitchen, canadian bakery, canada foodThis is one of the neatest bakeries/kitchens in all of Canada.  With a set of standards in sourcing their ingredients second to none, owners Tabitha and Paul Langel and Lyle and Kathy Barkman, use their kitchens to harvest and share really delicious food in the most ethical fashion.

They write, “We at Tall Grass Prairie Bread Company believe that good bread is made when we work with our Mother the Earth in a spirit of gratitude and with loving responsiveness to her needs and ours. Together with the Earth, those who grow, those who mill, those who bake and those who buy – each offer a unique gift to the creation of the Tall Grass product. Our bakeries are the meeting place where the loaf of bread is born and begins to sing its own song. (…) In our kitchen food traditions meet: First Nations influences, Métis streams, French Canadian tastes, and early European immigrant contributions. Whatever the prairies offer we try to work with.”

The are pressing their own sunflower oil in small batches on site so it’ll be very fresh and they make the best cinnamon buns I have EVER tasted!   This is the staff of life…from the  heavy German rye bread and overnight sourdough to the perfect hallah. Their repertoire has now expanded to include some great ready made meals. Pick up some bison lasagna or lentil loaf.  The Pork Stroganoff  is made with local organically raised pork (raised by the same farm family that grows our wheat) on a bed of locally made linguini. There are salads and soups and lots of old fashioned desserts – check out the selection of squares!
