Farmhouse Tavern, Toronto

Farmhouse tavern, canadian foodDescribing themselves as “Serving farmhouse hospitality. Rooted in the charming influences of the rural Ontario farmhouse. A little bit country/ A lot rock & roll. Cooking a blackboard menu of farm driven food. Pouring Ontario craft brews + VQA juice.” Sounds like this place was made with Food Day in mind!

Opening only in June of 2011, Farmhouse already had the critics buzzing. Owner Darcy MacDonnell (former GM of La Societe and alumni of Oliver Bonacini Restaurants) created Farmhouse Tavern as an homage to his parents and his rural Ontario roots. Chef Alex Molitz is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America who upon completion of his studies there worked at Daniel in NYC, the flagship restaurant of Chef Daniel Boulud.  We’re glad he’s returned home to Toronto.

A positively glowing review from the National Post said this of the Country/Rock & Roll vibe: “This artful memory of an Ontario farmhouse is a canny piece of stagecraft — a sophisticated operation hiding beneath Rescue decor.” In other words- don’t let the tractor seats and barn doors fool you- this food ROCKS.

While the dinner menu only has six mains and six appetizers, the emphasis here in on quality, not quantity. And for them, quality means grown as close to home as possible. Equipped with a herb garden and custom-built smoker on the patio, FARMHOUSE serves up dishes like the Ploughman’s Platter (PEI oysters, cheese from Glengarry, Harlequine Duck Egg and Berkshire bacon) and Veggie Garden Dumplings that the Post called “A dish to turn me vegetarian.”
