Battery Park Beer Bar and Eatery, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia
From the gang behind the phenomenally successful Brooklyn Warehouse comes a new joint right across the harbour from the North Halifax location. Brooklyn’s owners, Leo and George Christakos, are taking decades of experience in food & beverage service and mashing it up with the brewing prowess of Peter Burbridge & Josh Herbin of North Brewing to create Battery Park Beer Bar & Eatery in conjunction with North Brewing Craft Beer Store and pilot brewing system.
Chef Stephanie Ogilvie is over-seeing the culinary side of things. Her dedication to the most local and best ingredients is an attitude that is rare in the public house scene in Canada. At Battery Park she’s riffing on the sharing plates of many culinary traditions.
Yet while the menu may be reminiscent of Europe, the dishes are absolutely, almost stridently, Nova Scotian/Canadian. Remember that it’s Stephanie at the culinary helm of this ship. North Brewing spent grains are the basis for a lusty beer bread you can smear with butter and sprinkle with local Black Whale salt. There’re buttermilk biscuits and Anchored Coffee dark rye. That’s the beginning. Then come the sharing plates that are divided into four sections; Vegetables & (local) Cheeses, Meats (check out the inspired charcuterie and the lamb pops with siracha-honey), Seafood including Sober Island oysters and, of course dessert where I have to admit the bacon fudge caught my eye.
