Mount Julian ExteriorA century-old traditional Ontario resort hotel, Viamede Resort, and adjoining Mount Julian Resort, have been Stoney Lake landmarks since 1885. Steeped in history, Viamede sits on 165 acres of choice Kawartha Lakes wilderness. The resort overlooks exclusive Stoney Lake and boasts 2000 feet of shoreline complete with docks, swimming beach and lakefront cottages.

Viamede has a long and storied history. The original building is said to have been built in 1885, although the origins are murky with surveys from 1873 showing a smaller building marked “hotel”. In 1907, this building burned down, and the “new” Viamede was built in its place, featuring modern amenities of electric light and running water.

Chef Kevin McKennaThe Inn at Mount Julian, now Viamede’s culinary heart, is better documented. The complex was built between 1865 and 1875, although buildings have been added and demolished over the years. The two main buildings, The Inn at Mount Julian itself and the manager’s residence, have remained largely unchanged.

In late 2010, Viamede Resort was purchased by current Owner and General Manager, Ben Samänn. With a Swiss education in Hotel Management and a family background in the hotel and restaurant industry, Ben was keen to return Viamede to its former glory as the finest resort destination in the Kawarthas. To that end, grand changes, renovations and upgrades have taken place throughout the resort. It’s all about exceptional guest experiences.

Chef Kevin McKenna is as at home foraging in the forest as he is cooking at the legendary Fat Duck and Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons in England.He opened Earth and Earth Bloor West in Toronto, as one of the founders of The Group of Seven Chefs, and has cooked more than once at the famed James Beard House in Manhattan.  His mantra has been and continues to be the celebration of the region’s culinary riches.

Appetizer platter He prides himself on creating menus that showcase the fresh, local and unusual items. His exceptional talent means that every single bite is a trip to foodie-heaven.  Weekly menus reflect the ultimate in seasonality and place. There may ben an amuse bouche of rabbit, carrot “bacon”, pickerel belly, endive duck salad and freshly baked bread.  Or a chilled cucumber broth with mint, goat cheese and wild ginger bitters.

Lake Erie smelts don a cornmeal crust to be served with house pickles.  House Pickles, Lobster, Orange Dust Chardonnay.  The cheese plates are amazing as is dessert! The Indian Runner miso chocolate mousse  is served with spruce tip gelato.
