Morris East Restaurant & Wine Bar, Bedford, Nova Scotia
Jennie Dobbs began in Morris East in downtown Halifax. Before locally-inspired pizza was a trend, she was doing it. Near the university she had a ready market and the tiny restaurant was jam-packed nightly. There were absolutely no reservations. She opened Morris East Restaurant & Wine Bar in Bedford and, again, the clientele has followed.
Her menus at the new location remain solidly local in their focus and she is still one of the acknowledged leaders in the Nova Scotian food scene. But here one can call ahead and reserve a table to dine on some of the most delicious pizza in the province, if not eastern Canada. I love the one she makes with red wine poached pears, blue cheese, shallots, prosciutto and tarragon aioli! The Margherita is smeared with tomato, strewn with fresh mozzarella and torn fresh basil. There is freshly made daily pasta, good salads (the beet with goat’s milk cheese & hazelnuts is at left) and, of course being in Nova Scotia, she makes sure there’s great seafood.
Jennie has been nominated three times for the RBC Canadian Woman Entrepreneur Award in 2010, 2011 and 2012, and is a 2012 finalist for the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year Award. She is just that good!
